Ruth Bader Ginsburg Portrait Carving project

Ryan Biggs Clark Davis was honored to provide structural engineering services for the Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Portrait Carving project.

The permanent carving was installed in the Great Western Staircase at the New York State Capitol Building in Albany and unveiled yesterday. Also known as the “Million Dollar Staircase,” this structure was completed in 1898 and is comprised of a Corsehill sandstone. There are 78 total carvings; Bader Ginsburg was the first woman carved since the completion of the staircase in 1898 and one of only seven women recognized with this honor. The carvings showcase NYS Governors, US Presidents, explorers, soldiers, writers, and activists. Administered by the New York State Office of General Services, our scope included the structural design for the carving’s stone anchorage as well as design of the scaffolding access platform. Congratulations to our team members Stacey Thomas, Nadya Levitova, Matt Yerkey, Mike Miller, and Jamie Davis for lending their support to the successful completion of this historic project.
