Empire State Plaza Grand Staircase Awarded Project of the Year at 2016 SEI Awards
We are proud to announce that the Empire State Plaza Grand Staircase project has been awarded “Project of the Year” at the 2016 SEI Awards. A Jury of Awards from around the United States selected the project in the category of “Other Structures” based on creativity and innovation and design; practicality of design; client and owner satisfaction; and future value to enhance the engineering profession and benefit to the public. The project involved the complete reconstruction of the waterproofing system of the monumental stair structure, which spans over Madison Avenue in Albany, New York, and connects the terrace of the New York State Museum with the Plaza to the north. The project included the removal of the granite stairs and marble parapets, and the construction of a new concrete sub-slab with fully integrated drainage mat. Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis provided professional engineering services to assess the existing condition of the structure, assisted in sequencing the work to prevent excessive rebound and damage during removal and reconstruction activities, and analyzed the necessary stone support and anchorage. The Architect is Architecture+, and the General Contractor is Louis C. Allegrone, Inc.
