Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis provided the structural engineering design services for the new Nappi Wellness Institute at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. The five-story, $220 million, 209,000-square-foot facility houses services related to neurosciences, including a focus on Alzheimer’s disease. The facility incorporates more than 240 exam and consultation rooms for primary and specialty care services, as well as lab and radiology services, behavioral health, family medicine, pediatrics, the Center for International Health Services, the Joslin Center for Diabetes, and the Center of Excellence for Alzheimer’s Disease. The rectangular structure is oriented longitudinally east to west with a south-facing main façade on East Adams Street and created the new gateway to the Upstate Medical Campus. The building is steel-framed with cast-in-place concrete stair/elevator circulation towers that serve as shear walls for the lateral system of the building. The foundation system includes cased minipiles, grade beams, and a 12-inch structural slab on grade. There are two HSS steel truss pedestrian bridges that link the building to the adjacent cancer center and an adjacent parking garage.

Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis provided structural design services for the new 320,000+-square-foot drug manufacturing facility, which includes high-tech pharmaceutical manufacturing space, warehousing, and offices/laboratories.

The steel-framed building is supported by conventional spread footings. Elevated floor slabs are comprised of composite steel and concrete.  The exterior is a metal panel on horizontal steel girt system.  Special considerations for site excavation were made because the building is sited on expansive shale which is relatively close to the surface.  We designed a fix to “seal” the exposed shale between the site excavation and foundation backfills.

The design of Athenex was supported by a $200 million grant from New York State. The pharmaceuticals are manufactured in a controlled environment for shipment around the world. Athenex started in a University at Buffalo laboratory. The construction cost exceeded $200 million.

Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis provided the structural design for the $20 million historic rehabilitation of the Jones Court Apartments into the new Libertad Elmira housing development. The original building was constructed in the 1950s.

The structural scope included condition surveys, an addition of an elevator (pit and floor openings); three new three-story stair additions; infill of openings after the removal of an existing chimney; design of lintels for new openings in exterior walls; and design of repairs to masonry veneer.

The 88,000-square-foot building houses 91 units, 20 of which are reserved for homeless veterans. The building also houses an office for the Economic Opportunity Program, which provides a multitude of services to veterans and other residents, including wellness checks and nutrition services.

The facility also includes a barbershop, dentist office, workout room, storage units, an EOP classrooms, playground, and other amenities.

Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis provided the structural design for a new six-story, 50-unit apartment building in downtown Ithaca, NY. The brick-clad building features one- and two-bedroom apartments, office space, meeting rooms, and garden areas.

The structural system consists of masonry bearing walls and precast plank. The foundation system includes driven piles supporting concrete grade beams, walls, and columns.

The structure is LEED Platinum Certified by the Green Building Certifications Institute. The project won a Gold Award for Excellence in Masonry Design and Installation from the Central New York Chapter of the American Concrete Institute.

Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis provided structural engineering services for the Olympic Ski Jumps in Lake Placid. The Ski Jumping Complex is comprised of 90- and 120-meter ski jump towers built for the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid. Training and Nordic ski competitions occur at the complex year round.

Our scope of services for this project included review of existing record drawings showing existing ski jump trusses and starting gates, drawings showing proposed extended stair and starting gate assembly, and freeze rails to determine proposed design loads to be supported on existing trusses.

We also reviewed the design loads and structural analysis previously provided by another engineering firm. We analyzed existing trusses to support current ski in-run and starting gates, as well as an analysis to support proposed freeze rail and extended starting gate and stair assembly. We provided a summary of the results of the structural analysis showing the most highly stressed truss members including a comparison of load capacity to required member design loads. We evaluated existing truss capacity using required structural design loads in accordance with the NYS Uniform Code. We also provided truss reinforcing details for the large and small ski jumps and provided Construction Administration services.
