Tom Field will be retiring from Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis this summer after a 48-year-long career as a Civil Engineer. Tom earned his BS in Civil Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1973 then worked for several engineering firms before joining Clark Engineering & Surveying in January 1995. In 2014, when Ryan-Biggs Associates and Clark Engineering & Surveying merged to become Ryan Biggs Clark Davis Engineering & Surveying, D.P.C., Tom became a Senior Associate and Shareholder of the newly formed firm. Since then, he has continued to lead the firm's Civil Engineering department and provide his expertise and passion to essential and exciting projects across New York State.

The 2020 Building Code of New York State is coming our way soon and will be based on the 2018 i-Codes, including the International Existing Building Code 2018 IEBC. There are some subtle but potentially significant changes that will affect how we retrofit existing buildings.

Keeping up with changes in the Building Code can be challenging. The last significant New York State Code change was in 2016. The next significant Code change has been proposed for 2020 and is open for public comment through September 21, 2019.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to officially reopen the Gloversville Public Library this week. Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis began work on this extensive project in 2009, which included two building additions to the rear of the library, interior renovations, and restoration and support of the one-of-a-kind terra cotta entry structure.

Chris Latreille, P.E., Principal, wrote the feature article for the November edition of STRUCTURE Magazine highlighting the Binghamton University Energy R&D Building project. The new 105,000-square-foot, $45 million research facility officially opened in August 2017 on the Binghamton University campus and houses physics and chemistry programs focused on energy technologies of the future.

Jamie Davis, P.E., LEED AP, Principal, is presenting at the 2018 Fall Member Development Conference presented by the New York State Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) in Cooperstown this week. Jamie will be speaking at the opening luncheon and giving attendees a progress update of BIM-M (Building Information Modeling for Masonry).

Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis recently completed rehabilitation and design services at the Tower of Victory project in Newburgh, NY. Our role was to assist the Contractor (Allegrone Construction) to determine the appropriate extent of masonry repairs, assist the Contractor in redesign of floor repairs, design temporary shoring for floor repairs, review and make recommendations related to the stone cladding, and design stone anchorage.

Chris Lesher, P.E., is attending the Valentine Boathouse ribbon cutting ceremony at Skidmore College. Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis was retained to design the structure and foundations of two new buildings to expand the boathouse to a three-building complex to accommodate the rowing program. The new buildings include a 2,100-square-foot team building (housing locker rooms, offices, and multi-purpose training room) and a 1,300-square-foot storage building.

The restoration of Elston Hall at Schenectady County Community College has begun with the removal and reconstruction of the thickly settled and displaced portico on the east wing.

Several staff members are attending Steel Day at JPW Companies to celebrate the steel industry’s 10th Annual Steel Day. The event will include a facility tour and demonstrations throughout the afternoon. SteelDay is an annual event sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Constructionand hosted by its members and partners.

Jamie Davis, P.E., Principal, recently became certified in CD-BIM. The Certificate of Development – Building Information Modeling is an assessment-based certificate credential that establishes the knowledge and understanding of concepts to BIM and detailing practices.

The American Concrete Institute Central New York Chapter hosted Dr. Ken Hover at last night’s meeting. Dr. Hover presented “Variability in Testing Fresh Concrete: When to Throw the Challenge Flag” to over 65 attendees in Syracuse.

Restoration progress continues at the Gloversville Public Library in Gloversville, NY. Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis provided structural engineering services related to the restoration and support of the one-of-a-kind terra cotta entry structure, as well as design services for two building additions on the rear of the library.

The new Courtyard by Marriott hotel in downtown Troy officially opened last week with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis provided structural engineering services for the $18.66 million hotel.

Tom Field, P.E., Senior Associate, is presenting at the September meeting of the APWA Capital District on September 21. Tom and other presenters will be discussing the Green Infrastructure Technical Design Guidance.

Otto Schwarz, P.E., S.E., was 15 floors up of a 17-story building in Brooklyn on a two-man swing stage yesterday. The project involves concrete repair on the exterior cast-in-place reinforced concrete sunscreens.

Jack Healy, P.E., Principal, and Mike Ferrari, Engineering Intern, visited The Egg at the Empire State Plaza. Jack and Mike were performing fall restraint pull testing on the roof of The Egg. It was a gorgeous day for a site visit to get a view of Albany from above.

Lauren Stenroos is celebrating her second anniversary at Ryan Biggs | Clark Davis this month. Lauren earned her Master of Science in Civil Engineering with a minor in Architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

 The Libertad Elmira project broke ground this week, which is a new affordable housing development in downtown Elmira. The project aims to give affordable housing to those in need and to homeless veterans.

Congratulations to our staff members who participated in the 2018 CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge on Thursday at the Empire State Plaza in Albany. The 3.5 mile race is the largest annual road race between Utica and New York City.

Tom Field, P.E., Senior Associate, is presenting at today’s Green Infrastructure webinar hosted by the Capital District Regional Planning Commission. The CDRPC is now offering municipalities a new online diagnostic tool that provides communities with a self-guided land-use law assessment of Green Infrastructure (GI) gaps, barriers, and opportunities.

The University at Albany broke ground last week on its new ETEC building at the Harriman State Office Campus. The $180 million Emerging Technology and Entrepreneurship Complex will be the future home of the University’s College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity, which will be the first in the nation.

The Capital Region CANstruction 2018 competition is this week! CANstruction is a unique charity that hosts design competitions showcasing colossal structures made out of canned goods.
