ACI CNY Masonry Gold Award Winner
Ryan Biggs Clark Davis won a Design and Installation Masonry Gold Award from the Central New York Chapter of the American Concrete Institute for the Hughes Hall Envelope Replacement at Cornell University.
Hughes Hall is a three- to five-story concrete encased steel structure with a stone façade and block backup built in the 1960s. The project was prompted by significant deterioration of the existing stone façade and involved an energy retrofit and recladding the building with a new stone veneer. As part of the project, we worked with a team of consultants and contractors to remove the existing relieving angles, add insulation, and replace the windows. The plane of the existing structure and masonry backup walls varied throughout each elevation and maintaining a consistent plane for the finished face of the stone involved careful coordination with the air gap and insulation thickness, and with detailing changes to the existing stone shelf on the foundation.Kyle Oberdorf and Meera Ramesh attended the awards ceremony.
