The addition has a 6,000-square-foot mechanical penthouse, and the remainder of the addition is designed for a future second story. The addition consists of structural steel framing with a rigid frame lateral system and concrete spread footing foundations.
The project consolidated the specialized lab spaces into an open-plan laboratory to allow for more flexible uses. Laboratories are used for clinical trials, microbiology, and toxicology. The addition provided space for offices, a compounding pharmacy, and clinical laboratories. The Central Laboratory is full-service and an integral part of the large academic medical center.
